If Paradise Is Half As Nice, afgekort IPIHAN, is een project dat in 2008 is opgezet door kunstenaars Pim Palsgraaf en Daan Botlek. Zij vertrokken dat jaar naar Leipzig, Duitsland, om een verlaten fabriekspand tot tijdelijke werk-, woon- en tentoonstellingsruimte te transformeren. Het project is door de jaren heen steeds verder gegroeid en ontwikkeld. De groep bestaat nu uit zo’n 10 vaste kunstenaars die elk jaar een nieuwe locatie opzoeken. Dit jaar, tijdens IPIHAN #8, reizen ook twee gastkunstenaars, een filmmaker en een historicus mee. Ik ben één van die gastkunstenaars!
Van eind juli tot en met eind augustus zal ik in Altenburg (zo’n 45 km onder Leipzig) mijn atelier hebben. Wij zullen daar werken in een oud pand dat ooit een ‘Kaufhaus’, een industrieel slachthuis en een bakkerij huisvestte. De insteek van het project is ‘site-specific’ werk en experiment, dus wat ik er ga doen laat ik afhangen van wat ik er tegenkom. Wat ik wel zeker weet is dat IPIHAN wordt afgesloten met een doldwaas weekend: een expositie, feest, muziek, performances en lezingen. U bent daarbij van harte welkom! Van 24 t/m 26 augustus gooien we de deuren van ons pand open.

If Paradise Is Half As Nice, IPIHAN for short, is a project started by artists Pim Palsgraaf and Daan Botlek in 2008. They decided to go to Leipzig, Germany, that year, to transform an old factory building into a temporary workspace, home and gallery. The project grew and developed over time. This year the group consists of roughly ten ‘permanent’ artists who choose a new location every year. This year, the IPIHAN #8 edition, the group also invited two guest artists, a filmmaker and a historian to come along. I am one of those guests artists, and will therefore be working in Altenburg (about 45k beneath Leipzig) for about a month! I’ll be joining the group from the end of July until the end of August. We’ll be working in a building that used to house a ‘Kaufhaus’, an industrial abattoir and bakery.
The idea is to make site-specific work and experiment a lot, so I don’t have any fixed plans about what I’ll be doing there. What I do know, however, is that the closing weekend’s going to be a blast!
Starting Friday 24 August the area will be open to the public. We kick off with the opening of the multi-medial exhibition followed by a divers program with performances, music, lectures throughout the weekend (ending on Sunday the 26th). You are cordially invited!
